Installing industrial and commercial ceiling fans requires careful planning to ensure safety, efficiency, and long-term performance. At Hamilton Air, we provide detailed installation guidelines to help you get the most out of your high-volume, low-speed (HVLS) fans in warehouses, factories, gyms, retail stores, and other large spaces.

General Clearance Guidelines

To maximize airflow and maintain safety standards, always follow these key rules:

  • Maintain a center-to-center spacing of at least 2.5x the fan’s diameter between multiple fans.
  • Ensure the fan area is free of obstructions such as lights, sprinklers, or cables.
  • Keep a minimum clearance of 610 mm (24 in.) from all obstructions.
  • Install fans so that the airfoils are at least 3 m (10 ft.) above the finished floor.
  • Ensure fans are mounted plumb to the ground, unless column-mounted.

Ceiling & Wall Clearances

Different fan sizes require specific clearances from walls and ceilings. Always refer to the clearance tables provided in your Hamilton Air installation manual to determine safe distances.

Multiple Fan Installations

When installing multiple fans in a large space:

  • Position them with proper spacing to avoid airflow interference.
  • Overlapping airflow patterns can increase overall cooling efficiency.
  • Correct placement reduces stagnant air zones and optimizes circulation.

Special Considerations

  • Infrared & Radiant Heaters: Fans must be installed outside heater clearance zones and mounted at or above shielding.
  • Obstructions: Wide, flat-faced obstructions redirect airflow upward, creating stagnant zones. Adjust fan placement accordingly.
  • Outdoor Damp-Rated Areas: Only install damp-rated fans under fully covered structures with proper overhead protection.
